History of Heyside Parish Hall
As a gift of a local cotton spinner and mill owner, Richard Fitton, the building opened in 1868 as The Ede Institute. The building was intended to provide an education as a "Day and Sunday School for the instruction of children". This continued for close to 30 years until Blackshaw Lane School was built in 1895.
Over the past 160 years, the building has been used as a school, a place of worship, a community centre as well as a venue for many weddings, christenings and parties! It has gone through many reincarnations over that time. We're lucky that so many original features of the building remain, with its layout fairly unchanged from how it was first built. In more recent times, the building has been significantly improved with the additional of double-glazed windows, disabled toilet facilities, modern kitchens, as well as solar panels.
Today the Parish hall is a focal point for the local community being used each day and most evenings for both Church based and Community based groups to meet.
